A Hero in a Hockey Mask: Declan’s Last Wish

At just 5 years old, Declan McCombs was fighting a battle that no child should ever have to face — terminal cancer. As his body grew weaker with each passing day, Declan found strength in one thing that kept him going: his love for horror, particularly his favorite monster, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th.
For most kids, the idea of meeting a slasher icon would be terrifying. But for Declan, Jason was a symbol of courage — a figure who didn’t back down, no matter the odds. When a Jason cosplayer heard about Declan’s passion for the character, he didn’t hesitate. With a mask on, a machete in hand, and the unmistakable outfit, he made his way to Declan’s home. The moment he stepped in, Declan’s face lit up with pure joy. Instead of fear, all he felt was excitement and happiness. This was no longer a scary monster, but a hero in his eyes. Declan rushed into the cosplayer’s arms for a hug, holding tight as if he had finally found a friend who understood him.
Sadly, Declan passed away in 2020, but that unforgettable moment remains one of the most touching and profound examples of how heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes, they wear hockey masks and bring a little light into the darkest of days. 🖤
This beautiful gesture — a simple, yet profound act of kindness — will forever remind us that heroes can come in the most unexpected forms, and sometimes, their greatest gift is just showing up.
